Arise Day 2025

2025: The year it all comes together

Over the past four years, we have been working rather tirelessly on building a species ID infrastructure for everyone who works with Dutch biodiversity. We've used the past Arise Days to listen to your input, get ideas, and talk about how we were making progress. This year, we bring something new:

Results.

Learn how to access sensor data, how to use our growing database of AIs for image and sound recognition, how to access DNA data from your samples and how it can help you discover new species, for one. The first parts of ARISE are real and they're here for you to work and play with. We're delighted to tell you all about it - and about what comes next.

In short:

What: An update on Arise, keynote speeches, workshops, entertainment, meet old friends, make new ones. All lectures and activities will be in English.

Who: Biologists, ecologists, AI specialists, data stewards, and everything in between. If your work relates to biodiversity in the Netherlands, it probably relates to Arise in some way.

WhereNaturalis in Leiden.

When: Wednesday March 26, 9:00 to 17:00 (and drinks afterwards)

Costs: Free.

The program so far

A fully fledged program is in the making, but we can promise that, as always, there will be workshops, networking opportunities, and a part that is accessible to the general public. We will also have a session about how ARISE will form the backbone of other biodiversity infrastructures and initiatives. ARISE is Dutch in nature, so there will of course be beer and bitterballen at the end.

We are very proud to present our two Keynote Speakers for 2025:

Kristine Bohmann - A vacuum cleaner for aerial DNA

Many animals leave traces of DNA in the air, and Kristine Bohmann (University of Copenhagen) is an expert in collecting and measuring these. In her talk, she will explain the use of aerial DNA metabarcoding for biodiversity monitoring.

Caspar Janssen - Animal nature

Prize-winning Dutch nature journalist and writer Caspar Janssen presents a helicopter view of his country's nature, environmental problems, monitor and the species that embody them.
